Officers respond to active shooter in Colerain Township Kroger; 1 person shot

21. All right, the officer involved shot at NORTHGATE, KROGER, their Colerain Township. Here’s Public Information Officer Jim Love, ready to describe what happened. We were dispatched here to the Kroger here on Springdale Road at, uh, almost 4 p.m., a few minutes before Courtis’ clock came in as shots were fired, not knowing what we had had when we got here at that time. Hmm, I don’t have a lot of details to share with you yet. I know there was one person who, uh, was the subject of police attention and, uh, a little bit in the store and out of the store, but he ran. There was a chase and we were able to hold him at one point. Was this individual hit by a bullet? Jim, I’m not sure if it’s the same one or not. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF. TO YOUR KNOWLEDGE, IS EVERYTHING SAFE NOW? As far as I can tell, everything is pretty well locked down. EVERYTHING IS SECURE. THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS HANDLED PROPERLY BEFORE THEY KNOW IT, LET PEOPLE GO BACK AND LET THINGS HAPPEN. There are a lot of interviews going on. There are a lot of people around. So there were a lot of interviews, a lot of help from a lot of different police officers. If you see there are a lot of different police departments, we want to give credit to everyone who came to help us. THIS IS A HUGE POLICE RESPONSE AND YOU PRACTICE FOR IT. Those are the kinds of things you break through for and so on. Well, we’re shooting, uh, we’re shooting in the middle of the day and a very busy Kroger. THIS IS A VERY BUSY KROGER. You know, in our townships, one of the largest in the state of Ohio. WHEN YOU PUT IT ALL TOGETHER. YEAH, THAT’S A GREAT ANSWER. WHERE WAS THIS PURSUIT? HOW LONG WAS THIS LAST? YOU KNOW, I DON’T KNOW HOW LONG IT IS. Obviously, it started in the store and it came out of the store. Um, the chase came out of the store. And in Jim, we were reporting what we see to the sheriff’s office saying there was some sort of active shooter situation. THIS IS AN ACCURATE DESCRIPTION. Um, I would say, yeah, yeah. BY THE RESPONSE. From what I’ve heard, yeah. APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY SHOTS DO WE HAVE? I DO NOT KNOW. I HAVE NO IDEA. AND SO, BASICALLY, IF YOU CAN TELL US BECAUSE WE SEE PEOPLE CROSSING THE STREET, Presumably workers, relatives or people rushing to the scene, whatever is going on there, people who have been interviewed, what happens from this point? Well, they’ll make sure everything is taken care of first and foremost. YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE CAMERAS THAT ARE IN THE STORE. THIS WILL BE RETAINED FOR EVIDENCE AND FOR ESSENTIALLY THE PROCESSING OF ALL INFORMATION. So all the police work, all the police work has started now, everything they’re doing, it’s going to be ongoing. YEAH. IT’S GOOD. All these people here are witnesses, or rather, I should say, customers who were in the store. Many of them on this left side were employees when I was there earlier. I don’t know how many of them are there now and are employees. I AM NOT SURE. RIGHT AWAY. You may have already said this and I just ignored it, but, uh, the injuries of the person who was shot, I’m not sure I’m not sure. I DON’T HAVE THIS 100% CONCRETE. Jim, let me ask you real quick, maybe wrap this up. LISTEN TO THE SCANNER TRAFFIC ON THE WAY HERE. You know, it always strikes me by the courage of these officers. I mean, I could get the feeling and it wouldn’t surprise anyone who’s been in a Kroger store. You go for it, I’ll buy it, I’ll do it. You’re going to go to the small clinic to check behind the doors. PEOPLE ARE PROBABLY SCARED AND BARRED. JUST TALK ABOUT THESE OFFICERS. GO TOWARDS DANGER. And it seemed like that’s what happened in this case. AND LIKE I SAID, THIS IS A VERY HIGH VOLUME KROGER. There’s always a lot going on at this Kroger. There is a nice pharmacy that is quite busy. There’s a fifth third bank here too, which existed about two months ago inside the bank. AND SO, YEAH, YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE ALL THE PRECAUTIONS AND, YOU KNOW, THE TRAINING TO TRIGGER IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT IT WAS THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY IN A VERY BUSY KROGER, WAS THE PERSON INVOLVED IN THE LAWSUIT WHERE THEY ARE DETAINEES? Were they shot? WHAT HAPPENED? I DON’T KNOW. Somehow they were caught. I DON’T KNOW, I DON’T KNOW THE DETAILS OF HOW THIS HAPPENED. They are therefore in police custody. THEY ARE IN CUSTODY? YEAH. AND NO IDEA WHAT MOTIVE COULD HAVE BEEN AT THIS POINT. IT’S MUCH TOO EARLY. YEAH, I DON’T. ALL RIGHT. ALL RIGHT. JIM. THANK YOU. YOU ARE WELCOME. ENJOY IT. YEAH. So, the latest message from Jim Love, the Public Information Officer for the Colerain Township Police Department, adding some clarity to what we have reported so far. Um, a detained person. NOT CLEAR NOW, ACCORDING TO SIR
