Medical examiner identifies man killed in single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE: The Bexar County medical examiner identified the driver who died after police say he drifted off the road and crashed into a metal structure.

Antonio Gonzalez Almeida, 50, was clearly dead at the scene, according to San Antonio police.

The cause and manner of his death remain under investigation while the medical examiner’s office conducts an autopsy.


ORIGINAL STORY: The San Antonio Police Department is investigating what caused a driver’s death Sunday on the South Side.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday to eastbound Interstate 10 near the ramp to southbound Interstate 37.

Authorities said the driver, who was driving a Lexus, drifted off the right shoulder and into a grassy median for an unknown reason. Then the Lexus slid several meters before colliding with a metal highway support structure.

When police and first responders arrived on scene, the driver was visibly dead.

Vehicle debris was scattered across the highway, but no other vehicles or people were injured in this crash.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the driver’s cause of death.

Two additional vehicle-related deaths in San Antonio were reported between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday.

A driver crashed into a traffic attenuator just after 1:30 a.m. near U.S. Highway 90 and the South General McMullen Drive exit for the second weekend in a row. The driver has not yet been identified.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a driver of a white SUV about 15 minutes later on Old Historic Route 90 near César E. Chávez Boulevard West. The victim, a 50-year-old man, has not yet been identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.

If arrested, the driver of the white SUV will face a failure to stop and aid charge in connection with the accident.
