NYPD officer accused of shooting driver during New Jersey road rage incident

A New York City police officer has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say he shot another man during an apparent road rage incident in New Jersey, prosecutors said.

Hieu Tran, 27, was charged Thursday with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to a release from the Camden County Prosecutor.

Tran’s attorney did not immediately respond to request for comment. The NYPD said Tran is currently suspended without pay.

On May 17, shortly after 11 p.m., Voorhees City Police officers responded to a multi-car accident and found that one of the drivers involved had suffered a gunshot wound, the police release states. prosecutor’s office.

The unidentified 30-year-old man from Voorhees Township was transported to a local hospital where he remains under treatment, the release said.

Prosecutors said detectives used surveillance video, cellphone records and ballistics evidence to identify Tran as the shooter in the “apparent road rage incident.” That ballistic evidence from the scene was linked to Tran’s New York police-issued firearm, prosecutors said.

Tran is being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.

The prosecutor’s office said the investigation is active and ongoing.
