US Coast Guard responds to vessel taking on water

TWO PORTS, Minnesota. — On Saturday morning, the United States Coast Guard (USGC) responded to a distress call from a Canadian vessel taking on water near Isle Royal in Lake Superior.

According to social media posts, at 6:53 a.m. the USGC received a report from the Michipicoten that they had “allied” or hit something underwater and were taking on water. The ship was then approximately 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale.

The ship was carrying taconite and leaving Two Harbors.

The USGC reports that onboard pumps reduced the ship’s list by displacing water and no leaks were reported.
