ITD helps WYDOT as travelers face detour with Teton Pass closure

The following is a press release from the Idaho Department of Transportation:

With the catastrophic failure of Wyoming State Highway 22 over Teton Pass, the Idaho Department of Transportation is warning Idaho drivers and tourists that they must take a detour to access Jackson Hole, in Wyoming. The Teton Pass closure will remain in effect for the future forestry. ITD crews and equipment were on scene to assist the Wyoming Department of Transportation when the road failed and will continue to assist as needed.

“They called immediately. We started on our end, and they started on theirs,” said Lucas Richins, ITD operations foreman. “It was a good team effort. We’re here to support you, but we can make it less painful.

Richins said seven ITD dump trucks hauled away 80 to 90 loads of material from the massive landslide Friday and Saturday, June 7-8. The loads were transported a few miles away until it is determined what will happen with the rebuilding and cleanup efforts. .

Travelers should take State Highway 31 to US Highway 26, then turn left into Alpine onto US Highway 89 toward Hoback Junction. This route means drivers should allow an additional 30 to 75 minutes of travel time.

ITD has placed and will continually update digital billboards along eastern Idaho roadways, warning travelers of this closure well in advance so that alternate routes can be taken. SH-31 will also be monitored daily to assess the effects and needs associated with increased road use.

Stay informed about this closure and other traffic information by calling 5-1-1, visiting 511.idaho.gov or accessing the 511 app.
