Severe storms expected Sunday along the Interstate 25 corridor in the Colorado mountains

After a stormy Saturday, parts of Colorado may once again be hit with scattered strong to severe thunderstorms to end the weekend.

Storms are more likely along the Interstate 25 corridor, including in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and beyond to Colorado Springs.

The foothills and nearby mountains will also experience a risk of severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon.

Risks

The biggest threats from thunderstorms will be isolated large hail and damaging winds, but localized flooding could also occur. Hail could be the size of a quarter (1″) or larger, and wind gusts could exceed 60 mph near any storm.

Storms may be slow to move, which could result in very heavy localized precipitation beneath the storms. Remember to never drive on flooded roads, as water can cover potential hazards or washouts that can be dangerous. The risk of tornadoes is low across the state.

Hourly

Storms will begin any time after noon and continue, scattered, until around 8 p.m. The day won’t be completely wiped out, as there will be many dry hours, especially earlier in the day.

Storms will ease in the evening as temperatures drop from around 80° midday to 60° and 70° in the evening.

The risk of thunderstorms will increase further Monday afternoon. Risk areas will again include the mountains, foothills, I-25 corridor and the Denver metro area, but will also once again extend to the Eastern Plains. Threats will be similar on Monday, with isolated large hail and damaging winds the main concerns.
