COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina is seeking a third term with the support from someone who tried to stop him from getting a second one – former President Donald Trump.
Trump approved after calling her crazy and terrible in 2022 is just one of many ways Mace has attracted far greater attention than a typical second-term member of Congress.
She is a regular on interview shows, often upsetting the hosts. She calls on her party to show moderation on abortion and marijuana, but joins some of the more right-wing members. oust former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy.

Timmons’ divorce — and a widely shared Instagram post by a husband who said Timmons was having an affair with his wife — complicated his re-election bid. Timmons denied the allegations and asked for privacy.
Timmons’ challenger as he seeks a fourth term is South Carolina Rep. Adam Morgan, who leads the chamber’s Freedom Caucus, a group made up of the most conservative lawmakers in state government. He attacks Timmons from the right, saying he’s not conservative enough to be a true Republican.
Trump endorsed Timmons. Rep. U.S. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who helped McCarthy become House speaker, boosted Morgan’s campaign through social media.
3rd district
South Carolina’s 3rd District is wide open after the Republican representative’s decision. Jeff Duncan decided stop running after seven terms. Duncan’s wife of 35 years filed for divorce in 2023, accusing him of several affairs.
Seven Republicans are running and there is no real favorite. The district located in the northwest corner of the state contains several small population centers.
Governor. McMaster supported his longtime friend and nurse practitioner Sheri Biggs in her first run for political office. Trump’s support went to Mark Burns, a black pastor who supported Trump before his first run for president.
The other candidates are Kevin Bishop, who worked for more than 25 years for the U.S. senator. The 3rd District Democratic primary pits Frances Guldner, a high school science teacher, and Byron Best, who manages a Sherwin Williams paint store in Greenwood.
Other races
The only other incumbent speaker of the US House of Representatives facing a primary challenger is the Republican. Joe Wilson as he seeks a 12th full term in the 2nd District, which stretches from the suburban areas around Columbia west and south toward Aiken.
His opponent is Hamp Redmond, an entrepreneur who said he decided to run because of Wilson’s “Ukraine first” policy.
During the 6th District Republican primary, attorney Duke Buckner hires welder Justin Scott. The winner will face the Democratic U.S. Representative. Jim Clyburn, who is seeking a 17th term in the state’s majority-minority district bounded by areas around Charleston, Beaufort and Columbia.
In the 7th District Democratic primary, teacher Mal Hyman, who calls himself an independent Democrat, faces Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom veteran Daryl Scott. The winner will face the American Republican. Russell Fry, who is seeking a second term in the district stretching from Myrtle Beach to Florence in the northeastern part of the state.
