The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into the death of Callie Brunett, 35, of Loranger, and the disappearance of her two children, Jalie, 6, and Erin, 3, Thursday morning. Brunett’s father reported Callie missing to the sheriff’s office Wednesday evening, but did not enter his trailer. On Thursday morning, Brunett’s father found her body covered in blood on the floor of her bedroom in her trailer. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office later released information to the media regarding the search for Brunett’s daughters. Amber Alert Issued: An Amber Alert was issued around 12:20 p.m. by the Louisiana State Police Department for the two missing girls. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office also began searching the woods with K9s as well as using a helicopter. Shortly after the Amber Alert was issued, Sheriff Edwards provided an update on the case. He said there was a gap of at least 36 hours between when the family last spoke with Brunett and becoming aware the children were missing. Edwards said they did not know if the girls were still in the state and noted that residents were calling for information on their whereabouts. Mississippi Tip: Sheriff Edwards said deputies were alerted to a possible sighting of Brunett’s car in McComb, Mississippi. Later, officers learned that a license plate reader in Jackson had captured Callie’s car somewhere in Jackson, Mississippi. Edwards said deputies were then sent to Jackson to investigate. Suspect Arrested: Jackson authorities responded to a suspicious person report after a man was seen trying to enter several homes by checking doorknobs. When officers arrived on scene, a man, Daniel Callihan, led them on a chase. Soon, Callihan was arrested by US Marshals. Edwards said Callihan led officers to a wooded area where Jalie Brunett was found alive in her mother’s car. Callihan then led officers to Erin Brunett’s body, which was found in a wooded area near Callie’s car. Jalie was taken to an area hospital for treatment. A Tangipahoa woman drove her grandparents to Jackson to be with her. Suspect’s Relationship to Family: According to Edwards, Callihan resides in Tangipahoa Parish. Edwards said Callihan was in a relationship with Callie and they believe he is connected to her murder. Callihan said his agents had not yet interviewed him at the time the girls were found. Edwards also did not reveal a motive. Possible human trafficking: The Jackson Police Department held a news conference Thursday following the girls’ discovery and Callihan’s arrest. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said he contacted the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation’s human trafficking division after responding to the crime scene. “Based on the crime scene, what it looks like, this may be where human trafficking occurred,” Wade said. “We see cages, small animal cages. It’s very, very disturbing for me as a police chief and as a father to witness and see what I saw.” Shortly after news of a possible human trafficking site broke, Sheriff Edwards declared the case. was turned over to the FBI.
