Search intensifies for Albert Calibet after retired Los Angeles County deputy goes missing on Greek island of Amorgos

The search is intensifying for a retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who went missing in Greece during a scorching heatwave.

Albert Calibet, 59, was last seen on Tuesday while hiking on the Greek island of Amorgos. New drone video above the rocky terrain shows the extensive search efforts to find the Hermosa Beach man.

A helicopter and local shepherds also intervened to help find him.

A retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has gone missing in Greece amid a scorching heat wave in the Mediterranean country.

Surveillance video obtained by MEGA Live News, which is under investigation by Greek authorities, appears to show Calibet in a parking lot at the start of this hike.

“We’re sick to our stomachs, knowing he’s out there somewhere,” said his girlfriend Debbie Leshane.

She said Calibet called her right before she left for the hike. They talked for six minutes, then he sent her a photo at 9:20 a.m. from the trailhead sign. That was the last time she heard from him.

Leshane and Calibet’s brother traveled to the Mediterranean country with some researchers and rescuers from Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, after a full day of searching on Friday, the search was suspended. Efforts are expected to resume at dawn on Saturday.

“The island is half the size of Catalina, it’s not that big,” said his brother Oliver Calibet. “Time is running out…it’s on its fourth day right now. It’s not good, but we’re very positive about it.”

The scorching heat posed a research challenge as some parts of the country experience triple-digit temperatures.

Temperatures topped 104 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday across much of central and southern Greece, including greater Athens, the Cyclades and Crete.

Authorities are on heightened alert over the forest fires that ravage Greece every summer.

All this comes as a second American and a Dutch tourist have disappeared separately on different islands. Additionally, the body of a British TV personality was recently discovered after he also took a walk in hot weather on another Greek island.
