Cranston officer shoots at car linked to shoplifting report

A Cranston police officer was released from Kent Hospital as a manhunt continued for the driver who said authorities hit her with his car around the time the officer had discharged his weapon on Sunday.

These events took place on Reservoir Avenue in Providence, just beyond the city limit, following a report of shoplifting at the Garden City Center in Cranston around 5:15 p.m.

According to Cranston Police Maj. Officer Todd Patalano recognized the shoplifting suspects’ car from its description as it stopped at a light on Reservoir Avenue in Providence.

Patalano said the officer approached the car, opened the driver’s door and ordered the man and woman inside to get out, but they did not. Instead, the car sped off on Route 10 and was last seen near Niantic Avenue.

According to Patalano, the suspect’s car came into contact with the officer, who fired one round from his service weapon.

The incident remains under investigation by a number of agencies, in accordance with protocol for police-involved shootings. Police in Cranston and Providence are involved, as well as the Rhode Island State Police and the Attorney General’s Office.
