Trump’s gag order, which bars him from speaking about jurors, witnesses and other parties involved in the Manhattan Supreme Court case, remains in effect.
Trump’s lawyers also asked Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the trial, to end the silence order because the trial is over.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, however, urged Merchan to keep the restrictions in place, at least until a sentencing hearing is held and certain post-trial motions are resolved.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement that the former president and his legal team “will continue to fight the unconstitutional gag order imposed by Judge Merchan.”
The order “wrongly silences” Trump “at the height of his campaign,” Cheung said, adding that voters “have a fundamental right to hear his message.”
Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. A spokesperson for the Manhattan DA declined to comment.
Last month, Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in a scheme to hide a secret payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee is expected to be decided on July 11, just four days before his party’s nominating convention.
The crime of falsifying business records in New York carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, although Merchan could impose a sentence that would spare Trump jail time.
