Plane with only one pilot on board crashes off Jones Island

An older plane crashed Friday morning in the San Juan Channel off Jones Island with only the pilot on board.

The plane was flying north to south when it crashed near the north end of Jones Island and sank, according to San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter.

The Coast Guard previously said the accident occurred between Orcas Island and Johns Island.

Search and rescue operations were underway Friday afternoon. Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles has deployed a helicopter, while Coast Guard Station Bellingham currently has boats on the water, Petty Officer spokeswoman Annika Hirschler said around 2 p.m.

Dive teams from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are also assisting at the request of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

The FAA said Friday afternoon that the pilot was flying alone.

Jones Island is about 77 miles northwest of Seattle.
