3-year-old and mother rescued from canyon in Nevada County

A 3-year-old child and his mother were rescued Friday from a steep canyon in Nevada County following a search effort that included an Amber Alert. The child was airlifted out of the canyon with no injuries other than scratches and possible dehydration, according to a sheriff’s office incident commander. The child’s mother, who had fled into the isolated, bushy area after a fight with the child’s father, was being helped out of the canyon by ropes and was also doing well physically. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said 13 deputies and 35 search and rescue volunteers were involved in the search for the woman and her child. Volunteer searchers heard noises and cries for help around 6:30 p.m. and alerted search partners of their GPS coordinates, Scales said. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services later confirmed the location in an area difficult to reach with its FIRIS aircraft. CHP also found the two men with their helicopter. The child was removed from the area around 7:11 p.m. and reunited with his father around 8:47 p.m. Rescue crews were still working to get Salitrero to safety at that time. This story is developing.
