Compton pool party shooting leaves 1 dead, 5 injured; suspect at large

COMPTON, California. (KABC)– A pool party in Compton turned deadly Friday night when a shooting broke out, leaving one person dead and five others injured.

The incident was reported around 7:50 p.m. at a residence near Mayo Avenue and Greenleaf Boulevard, near Compton College.

Authorities said the celebration quickly turned into chaos when gunfire erupted. About a hundred people scattered and ran around the neighborhood in swimsuits, leaving their belongings behind at the party.

According to the Compton Fire Department, a man was found dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet identified him. Two other men and three women were also shot. They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What sparked the shooting is clear. A witness who spoke with ABC7 said her niece was at the party and was one of the victims of the shooting.

“When they were getting ready to leave, these people got angry and started shooting,” Janice Brayboy said. “The owner of the house, I heard, was killed. My niece was shot in the arm. We don’t know who did it.”

Brayboy’s niece had surgery on Saturday and is recovering.

During this time, the shooter(s) remain at large.
